Hoffmann specialized in crazy party scenes where people change identities and nothing is what it seems and on like that.

"The Sandman" is the place to go for the robot.Amateur Reader (Tom)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13675275555757408496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-76997603240473249102013-01-15T16:26:19.197-08:002013-01-15T16:26:19.197-08:00Read Hoffmann and start with the The Life and Opin...Read Hoffmann and start with the The Life and Opinion of Tomcat Murr, it's a hilarious book - well, half of it is, the one about the cat writing his autobiography.LMRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08538873868140070018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-49024604024088094352013-01-15T15:44:22.032-08:002013-01-15T15:44:22.032-08:00I haven't read Hoffmann but will try to rectif...I haven't read Hoffmann but will try to rectify that soon - do you know in which tale I can find the robotic mannequin? I'm sure you're right about the German Romantic influence. One peril of reading works in translation from literatures one knows nothing about is stumbling on something like this that seems like nothing else on earth - until its influences become revealed. Still, that it seemed to me like nothing else on earth made it a surprising, even thrilling thing to read. Now that I've read my castle in the air, I guess I'll have to put a foundation under it and hope that it will still seem as special. seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-61744635665535327882013-01-15T15:23:51.931-08:002013-01-15T15:23:51.931-08:00That one is also available in English, and I'm...That one is also available in English, and I'm curious to read it. This one was a gem. Though it's been a couple months since I've read it, it seems to have settled into some niche in my head where I won't be able to get it out. seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-86661670466696274482013-01-15T12:20:59.798-08:002013-01-15T12:20:59.798-08:00What is this crazy thing? You give me some hints ...What is this crazy thing? You give me some hints - Almqvist has likely been reading E.T.A. Hoffmann and other German Romantics, and probably Sterne, although the Germans had all absorbed Sterne. The book maybe also has something in common with the incident-packed pre-novel novels we now for some reason call "romances."

Wait, a robotic mannequin? All right, that is actually stolen from Hoffmann.

I will have to read this book sometime and find out if I am right.Amateur Reader (Tom)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13675275555757408496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-44131154198875465132013-01-15T07:26:57.798-08:002013-01-15T07:26:57.798-08:00I've read another of his novels, a short book ...I've read another of his novels, a short book called "The Week with Sara" - in German Die Woche mit Sara. It was also strange and original, a bit more conventional than this but it made me think I would like to read more of him. I remember that he had very modern views on relationships.
