And regarding Fortunata and Jacinta, I haven't yet even dared to do the math on how much I'll need to read each day to finish it by October. October 2013 seems more reasonable. seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-84294072395509513952012-08-17T14:25:40.415-07:002012-08-17T14:25:40.415-07:00Dwight - I'm sorry you weren't able to mak...Dwight - I'm sorry you weren't able to make it (I didn't realize you were in the area - had I known, I would surely have alerted you). seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-68928295796076976352012-08-16T04:22:05.295-07:002012-08-16T04:22:05.295-07:00Very nice post and very interesting. I'm the only one here not familiar with her but that is no surprise as I hardly read translated books in English but would opt for French or German translations.
Translation could be an artform and if she has a great reading voice I suppose she is musical and a good translator needs an ear for language. As you note, there are many good books awaiting translation, but probably not enough critical mass in the publishing business to set some of those translations in motion. seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-10499751122065593362012-08-15T15:41:23.893-07:002012-08-15T15:41:23.893-07:00Well, there's still a lot of non-fiction mater...Well, there's still a lot of non-fiction material to translate, but I guess that's not very commercial.

It's sad that she has difficulty finding publishers interested in her translations. Pretty much everything that she hasn't translated herself has already been translated by others. She did note that Saramago's first novel, a realist work unlike his later books, has just been republished in Portuguese.

The Pérez Galdós and Alas books are the only current projects she mentioned. She did, however, note the difficulty of finding publishers interested in some of the many as-yet-untranslated-books that she would like to see made available in English. seraillonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654593356535433945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2609668304633418767.post-10114858681113323212012-08-15T13:55:54.508-07:002012-08-15T13:55:54.508-07:00Beautiful post!
